MOSS Vs WSS 3.0 For PerformancePoint Server 2007

Recently my Customer asked me this question. "Do we need MOSS 2007 or WSS 3.0 to publish the dashboards created using Office PerfomancePoint Server 2007 M&A? "

That was the time for me to explain my customer how Microsoft has tightly coupled the Office Products in the Business Intelligence Space. Its not that easy to look at PerformancePoint Server as an independent Dashboard/Planning Product. The front end(UI) where the Business users and Senior Management gets to see the dashboards with scorecards and KPIs created using PPS is majorly going to be a SharePoint Portal.

Though the minimum software requirement for PPS to work is to have Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3.0), the following features that are available in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) helps in mapping the Organization's Vision in the BI space on a longer run.

Simply MOSS = WSS 3.0 + The below features

  1. Social Networking
  2. My Site
  3. Site Directory
  4. User Profiles
  5. Site Manager
  6. Portal or "Enterprise" templates
  7. Search
  8. Knowledge Network / People Search
  9. Business Data Catalog / Business Data Search
  10. Document Workflow
  11. Excel Services

Its crucial to make the Customers comfortable in understanding the technical feasilbilities of a S/W Product and how it helps the Organization in improving the Business.
